Learn how to incorporate True and False questions into your lesson. A simple and fun way to test your class members’ knowledge of any gospel subject.

LDS class discussions

True or False is one of my favorite games to incorporate into a lesson. It’s a simple technique to get the class thinking and for them to test themselves on a certain subject. It is not uncommon for church members to get asked questions by their nonmember friends, neighbors or even co-workers regarding their beliefs. Often times nonmembers will bring up incorrect information that they have heard and want to know if it is true. True and False questions are a great way to be sure class members understand exactly what it is that the Church holds to be true.

There are a couple of different ways you can

play the True or False game.

#1: After reading through your lesson and putting your notes together about everything you want to cover, look at your lesson and see where it is (or can be) broken up into sections. At the beginning of each new section, come up with a True or False question that has to do with that new section. Asking a True or False question at the beginning of each new section is a great way to segue from one section of your lesson to the next or in other words, from one point to another.

After a class member answers the True or False question, you can ask them, “Why do you think it’s true?” or “Why do you think it’s false?” Not only is this a great way to begin the next section of your lesson but it is also a great way to start a class discussion.

#2: You can use it as an attention-getter at the beginning of your lesson, or use it as a fun way to review everything you’ve discussed at the end of your lesson. Whether you do it at the beginning or at the end, when you do it this way you will be asking all of your questions one right after another rather than breaking them up and asking them throughout the lesson.

By doing it this way, you have the option of making it more competitive by dividing up your class into two teams. Take turns asking each team a question and if they get it right they can get a point. *Two points if they can explain “Why?”

Be careful when competing against teams that no one gets their feelings hurt so as to not distract from the Spirit and cause ill feelings. Any competition should be done in fun and provide an opportunity to connect as a class.

You can also NOT divide up into teams and just either 1) call on class members individually or 2) call on the first person to raise their hand.

LDS games for lesson

No matter how you incorporate True or False questions into your lesson, you can also bring a treat as a reward for answering the questions. Many times I have brought a bag of small candy like Starbursts or mini candy bars and at the end of the game, I will give 2 candies to each person on the winning team and 1 candy to each person on the losing team. OR if we are not doing it in teams, as I ask each class member a question, I’ll give 2 candies if they get it right and 1 candy if they get it wrong.

As always, be aware of health issues with the members of your class before bringing any kind of food and never bring any on Fast Sunday.

*I have brought candy and done this game with adults and they loved it!

LDS teaching tips

Don’t be scared or feel it’s too hard to come up with True or False questions that go along with your lesson, it’s really easier than you think! 🙂

One way to approach it is to make a list of facts about your lesson subject and then take some of those facts and turn them into false statements by either changing the wording or leaving out something very important. Below is an example of some True or False questions I have used in the past:

  • Every priesthood holder who prepares, blesses, or passes the sacrament is acting on behalf of the Lord. (T)
  • Deacons who hold the Aaronic Priesthood are the only ones who can pass the sacrament (F)
  • If you give one-tenth of your income to the poor and tell the bishop what you have done, that counts as tithing. (F)
  • You don’t have to pay tithing to qualify for a temple recommend. (F)
  • During tithing settlement, you review your personal tithing records for the year with your bishop, branch president, or mission president. (T)
  • Translated beings are the same as resurrected beings (F)
  • Translated beings never taste of death (T)

Have fun with it!

Yours Truly,
