*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.

**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

***A free PDF DOWNLOAD of the Study Guide is available at the bottom of this post, making it easy for those who’d like to print out a copy. OR you can add Melanie’s Library to your mobile device home screen by following these instructions, click HERE

THE LORD BLESSES ME WHEN I AM HUMBLE

BACKGROUND

PDF DOWNLOAD: Print the PDF download and share it with your family. See if they can figure out which word fits into all of the blanks.

(Answer: Humility)

  • Can we be both humble and fearless? (yes)
  • Can we be both humble and courageous? (yes)

VIDEO: Humility (1:06), click HERE

SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON

Although pride and wickedness seem to dominate Jaredite history, there are also examples of humility in these chapters.

Read the following scripture passages where the Jaredites were humble. Stop and ask questions such as:

  • Why did the Jaredites humble themselves in this situation?
  • What did they do to show their humility?
  • How were they blessed as a result?

READ:

  1. Ether 6:11-12
  2. Ether 6:27-30
  3. Ether 9:28-35
  4. Ether 10:1-2

PONDER & DISCUSS

Notice that in some cases, the people were compelled by their circumstances to be humble. Consider what you can do to willingly “walk humbly before the Lord” (Ether 6:17) rather than be compelled to be humble.

Are there blessings we might be missing out on because we are not being humble?

RIGHTEOUS LEADERS BLESS THE PEOPLE THEY LEAD

BACKGROUND

SONG: Sing the first verse and chorus to “Do What is Right,” click HERE

Going along with the chorus, share the following quote.

QUOTE BY ELDER NEAL A. MAXWELL:

Another mistake we make is that we foolishly think we are free to choose, without wanting the consequences of those choices! Bainville, the French philosopher, said, “One must want the consequences of what one wants.” (The Holy Ghost: Glorifying Christ, Ensign, July 2002)

one must want the consequences of what one wants, bainville, choice and accountability, www.melanieslibrary.com, inspiring quotes

SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON

Chapters 7-11 of Ether cover at least 28 generations. Although not much detail can be given in such little space, a pattern quickly emerges: righteous leadership leads to blessings and prosperity, while wicked leadership leads to captivity and destruction.

Below are just a few of the kings mentioned in these chapters. Read the associated verses, and see what you can learn from their examples—positive and negative—about leadership. (CFM manual)

SCRIPTURE JOURNALS: In your scripture journals make two columns. Label one “Righteous Leaders” and the other “Wicked Leaders.” As you read about each of the following leaders, put their name under which column best describes them. Then discuss as a family the positive or negative consequences that came from their leadership.

  • Orihah—Ether 6:30–7:1
  • Shule—Ether 7:23–27
  • Jared—Ether 8:1–7, 11–15
  • Emer and Coriantum—Ether 9:21–23
  • Heth—Ether 9:26–30
  • Shez—Ether 10:1–2
  • Riplakish—Ether 10:5–8
  • Morianton—Ether 10:10–11
  • Lib—Ether 10:19–28
  • Ethem—Ether 11:11–13

PONDER & DISCUSS

Think about opportunities you might have to lead or influence others in your home, your community, your Church calling, and so on. How has your leadership or influence impacted others? What makes a good leader or influencer?

When it comes to Church leaders, what appropriate expectations should we have? What expectations should we not have?

The following video clip from Elder Holland might help add clarity to our expectations of leaders in the Church.

WHAT IS A SECRET COMBINATION?

BACKGROUND

SCRIPTURE

READ: Ether 8:23 & 26

According to these verses, why was Moroni commanded to write “these things” about secret combinations?

MINI LESSON

(Taken from Scripture Study of Latter-day Saint Families)

OBJECT LESSON: Show a picture of your family. Invite family members to share different ways that families are under attack today. Ask:

  • What influences exist in the world today that tend to harm families?
  • What do you think is ultimately behind these influences?
  • Do you believe there are secret combinations today?
  • Why do you think Satan desires to destroy the family?

Tell your family that they are going to look at a snapshot of a Jaradite family.

READ: Ether 9:1-14 and be prepared to share the good and bad they noticed that influenced this family.

Optional – If you have several people in your family and they like to act, you may make name tags for the main characters in this story and have your family act out this story while a narrator reads it.

  • Why do you think Omer was warned to depart? (vs 2-3)
  • What do you think influenced this family not to love one another? (vs 1, 4-6)
  • How would you describe the family life of these people as a result of their wickedness? (vs 5, 7-10)
  • Why do secrets and the desire for gain and power have such an evil influence on people? (vs 1, 6, 11)
  • Why do you think Omer was placed back upon the throne as king? (vs 13)
  • How might love keep Satan from being able to destroy a family?

PONDER & DISCUSS

ACT ON WHAT YOU LEARN: Gospel learning includes more than reading and pondering. We often learn the most by acting on the truths in the scriptures. Applying what we talked about, how can we as a family increase the feelings of love in our family?
