Come, Follow Me Daily Study Guide for the week of October 12-18, 2020 covering 3 Nephi 20-26. For personal and/or family study of the scriptures, geared towards families with teenagers, single adults, and empty nesters.

*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.

**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

***A free PDF DOWNLOAD of the Study Guide is available at the bottom of this post, making it easy for those who’d like to print out a copy. OR you can add Melanie’s Library to your mobile device home screen by following these instructions, click HERE

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING AN ACCURATE RECORD

BACKGROUND

(Adapted from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families)

Ask your family about an event that you wrote down in your journal. Ask them what they remember. Then share with them what you wrote about it from your journal. OR if you don’t have an event written down, ask the following questions:

  • Have there ever been times you wanted to recall the details of an event that happened in the past but you couldn’t remember them?
  • Have you ever wished that you had written the whole thing down?
  • How could a journal entry of that be helpful?

SCRIPTURE

READ: 3 Nephi 23: 6-13

  • What did the Savior say was missing from their scriptures? (vs 9)
  • Why would the account of others being resurrected after Christ be especially important? (vs 11)
  • What did he ask them to do about the omitted account of Samuel the Lamanite? (vs 13)
  • What does this teach us about the value of keeping accurate records and journals?
  • After Jesus told the people to write Samuel’s prophecy, what did he command them to do? (vs 14)

MINI LESSON

You can do 1 of 2 things.

#1: Have family members write something in their scripture journals that inspired or impressed them during the past week.

OR

#2: Print out some family photos – anything from the last 6 months. Give everyone at least one photo and a piece of paper. Have each person tape/glue the photo to the top of their paper. Underneath the photo, have each person write about that event.

To get people started, you could ask them the following questions: What happened? When did it happen? Who was there? What was special about this day? How did it make you feel? What are you grateful for about this day? How did you see God’s hand that day?

Put the photos and papers in a 3-ring binder for safekeeping. This could be the beginning of your family record. Every month or so try and do this again. This makes for a great Sunday activity.

PONDER & DISCUSS

  • If the Savior were to examine the records our family has kept, what questions might He ask us?
  • Are there any important events or spiritual experiences that we should record?
  • Why is it important to record our family’s spiritual experiences?
  • Counsel as a family how and what events you should record.

THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN

GAME: Play Hedbanz using the following words:

Temples, Meetinghouses (or Church Buildings), Missionary Work, and Lesson Manuals

*For instructions on how to play, click HERE

ASK: What do all of these things have in common? What gospel principle involves all of these things? (The Law of Tithing)

Tithing money is used to pay for each of these things.

SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON

READ: 3 Nephi 24: 7-12

POWERPOINT: The Law of Tithing, How Much Do You Know?

*The slideshow contains several questions with answers to those questions from church leaders. After each question, pause and get everyone’s thoughts on what they think the answer might be. Then share the quote that goes with that question and discuss what you learned from that quote.

**A popular way in my home to encourage discussion is to have fruit snacks or Hershey Kisses on hand and reward those who participate. 🙂

DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO BEST USE SLIDES

This slide show automatically goes to the next slide every 15 seconds. Click the FULL SCREEN button at the bottom of the slide show and then hit the PAUSE button. With the slide show paused, it will not advance every 15 seconds. This will allow you to take as long as you want at each slide. You can move back and forth between the slides by using the ARROW buttons on your keyboard or by clicking on the arrows next to the Play/Pause button. You can also move forward by clicking the screen. When finished,  simply hit EXIT FULL SCREEN at the bottom or ESC on your keyboard.

PONDER & DISCUSS

Sometimes the blessings from tithing are not what we might always think. Elder Bednar shares what the “Windows of Heaven” might include.

Has your family received blessings from paying tithing? Perhaps someone would like to share an experience that they have had.

SCRIPTURE

READ: 3 Nephi 25: 5-6

Commenting on the word turn in verse 6, Joseph Smith said that word turn may be better understood as “seal” or “bind” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith). Reread the verse, substituting these words, and see what clarity it adds.

MINI LESSON

Doing family history work is the best way to gain a testimony of family history work. Many people just aren’t sure what to do. Here are a few suggestions. As a family pick at least one to do together.

  1. FamilySearch Tree app. Download the app. Log in with your Church username and password. Click the temple icon, and follow the prompts for which ordinances you want to do and how many. Reserve the name(s) of family members you will do temple work for in the future. Print these names, or take your phone to the temple and have them print them off for you. All that’s left to do is perform the ordinances. After the ordinances are complete, within 24 hours you will get a notification on your app that your temple work has been recorded.
  2. Search for a family history center near you and schedule a time to visit as a family. There are many awesome activities they will do with you!
  3. If you are not near a family history center, go to familysearch.org and log in. Look for the section called “Family History Activities.” Pick one that interests you. My family loves the “Compare-a-Face” and “All About Me” sections. (On the app, click the More icon and then Family History Activities)
  4. Using the Gospel Library app, click on Temple and Family History. Spend a few minutes scanning through the content.

PONDER & DISCUSS

Watch the following video and discuss the many blessings that are promised if we will do temple work.

GENERAL CONFERENCE DAY

Study a recent General Conference talk. A great way to study a conference talk is to read along and highlight the parts that stand out to you. Then after the talk, review and discuss what you have highlighted.
