*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.

**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

***A free PDF DOWNLOAD of the Study Guide is available at the bottom of this post, making it easy for those who’d like to print out a copy. OR you can add Melanie’s Library to your mobile device home screen by following these instructions, click HERE

SALT, A CANDLE, AND A COAT

BACKGROUND

OBJECT LESSON: Show the following items and ask what they have in common: salt, a candle, and a coat

SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON

SALT

READ: 3 Nephi 12:13

(The following is taken from Ensign article “How Can I Be the Salt of the Earth?”)

Under the law of Moses, meat needed to be salted before it was used as an offering. Just as salt prepared meat for an offering, we can help prepare the world for the Lord by becoming “the salt of the earth.”

Salt of the earth: When we make covenants with Jesus Christ, we promise to prepare the world for His Second Coming.

Lose its savor: We are to help others come to Christ. If we neglect to do so, we may become “as salt that has lost its savor.”

Good for nothing: Salt that loses its savor becomes good for nothing. We are the salt of the earth when we “stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that [we] may be in.”

QUOTE BY PRESIDENT MONSON:

The poet wrote:

I met a stranger in the night, whose lamp had ceased to shine;

I paused and let him light his lamp from mine.

A tempest sprang up later on, and shook the world about,

And when the wind was gone, my lamp was out.

But back came to me the stranger—his lamp was glowing fine;

He held the precious flame and lighted mine.

Perhaps the moral of this poem is simply that if you want to give a light to others, you have to glow yourself.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SERVE TWO MASTERS?

(Taken from Scripture Study for Latter-Day Saint Families)

BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE

READ: 3 Nephi 13: 19-21

OBJECT LESSON #1: Give everyone a magazine or let them look on their device and have them each find 3 pictures.

  1. A picture of something a moth could corrupt.
  2. A picture of something that could be destroyed by rust
  3. An item someone might want to steal.

Have everyone show others what pictures they selected. Ask the following questions:

  • Does this mean that Jesus doesn’t want us to have nice clothes, cars, or other things?
  • What does it mean to make something our treasure?
  • What does it mean to have our hearts set on our treasure?

Now have your family list things that moths, rust, and thieves can’t hurt (such as family ties, faith, love of God, knowledge)

  • Why are these things safe from thieves or rust?
  • How long will these things last compared to new clothes?
  • Is it possible for a person to have their hearts set on riches while at the same time serving God? (The next object lesson will help answer this.)

MINI LESSON

OBJECT LESSON #2: To prepare for this object lesson, get two straws and two cups. Fill one of the cups with water. Give a family member a straw and the empty cup and ask them to breathe through it. Then give the same person the other straw and the cup with water in it and ask them to take a drink through the straw. Next, have that person hold both cups and put both straws into their mouth and try to drink and breathe through the straws at the same time.

After the person has discovered that this is impossible…

READ: 3 Nephi 13:24

PONDER & DISCUSS

  • What two masters do people often try to serve at the same time?
  • What masters compete with God for attention?
  • What does “Mammon” mean? (To find the answer, look up “Mammon” in the Bible Dictionary and have family members jot down the answer in their scripture journals)
  • Why is trying to serve God and riches more dangerous than trying to breathe and drink at the same time?
  • What can our family do to focus on spiritual instead of earthly treasure this week?

OTHER SHEEP

BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE

READ: 3 Nephi 16:1-3

VIDEO: Why Did Jesus Say That There Were Other Sheep Who Would Hear His Voice? (1:01), click HERE

MINI LESSON/PONDER & DISCUSS

In verse 3 we read, “They shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among my sheep”

SHARE STORY BY EMILY BELLE FREEMAN: (Taken from Don’t Miss This)

“When I was younger, we raised a small flock of sheep. Every small flock will generally have a lead sheep, and ours was named Big Mama. She loved my dad. When she heard him calling, she would run from the far back corner of the field to get to him. Big Mama looked like all the other lambs, but she didn’t sound like them. Something wasn’t quite right about her ‘baa,’ but my dad could mimic it exactly. They would talk back and forth to each other throughout the day, my dad and Big Mama.

“One morning the sheep went missing. My dad figured they had gone under the fence by the irrigation ditch and into the acreage of the farmer down the street. That man raised thousands of sheep. I can remember driving to his house with my dad to ask if we could have our sheep back. ‘Are they marked?’ he asked my dad. ‘No,’ my dad answered. ‘Well, I’m not just going to give you seven of my sheep if you can’t even tell if they are yours.’ My dad quickly replied, ‘Oh, I will know which ones are mine; they come whey they are called.’ The farmer looked at him incredulously and then walked out of his house with us as if to say, this I’ve got to see.

“My dad stood up on the tailgate of our little white truck and began calling the sheep. He made that funny ‘baa’ noise. I wish you could have seen that farmer’s face! For the first bit, nothing happened. The farmer was about to ask my dad to leave. And then, from the very back of the pasture, Big Mama answered back. My dad called again, and again she answered back, and then she came running to him, with six other lambs following right behind. The farmer couldn’t believe it. In fact, he helped load all seven into the back of our truck.”

What could this story teach us about hearing and recognizing the voice of the Savior when He calls?

In verse 3 we also read “that there may be one fold and one shepherd”

Is being of one fold implying that we need to be all the same?

SHARE QUOTE DIETER F. UCHTDORF:

While the Atonement is meant to help us all become more like Christ, it is not meant to make us all the same…As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are united in our testimony of the restored gospel and our commitment to keep God’s commandments. But we are diverse in our cultural, social, and political preferences. The Church thrives when we take advantage of this diversity and encourage each other to develop and use our talents to lift and strengthen our fellow disciples. (“Four Titles,” General Conference, April 2013)

What are some examples of ways that we can use our talents to lift and strengthen our fellow disciples?

GENERAL CONFERENCE DAY

Study a recent General Conference talk. A great way to study a conference talk is to highlight the part(s) that stands out to you as you listen to the talk. Then after the talk, review and/or share and discuss what you have highlighted.
