*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. These are my own thoughts and testimony combined with other resources that I have gathered. Everyone should study the scriptures in a way that’s best for them, but I do hope you find these outlines helpful.

*SCRIPTURE JOURNALS – I strongly suggest having a scripture journal. Many times my outlines will suggest writing something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

*A free PDF DOWNLOAD of the Study Guide is available at the bottom of this post. You can also add Melanie’s Library to your mobile device home screen by following these instructions, click HERE

*SONGS – For a list of suggested songs for each day of the week, be sure and check out the blog called Music for Latter-day Life by clicking HERE. Suggestion for NON-SINGERS: Instead of singing, listen to the song suggested on Music for Latter-day Life and as you listen, write in our scripture journals how you have seen the hand of the Lord in your life or something you are grateful for. A great way to invite the Spirit to your scripture study.

VIDEO: Reach Out in Love (8:31), click HERE

  • What are ways that we as a family can be more actively engaged in the gospel?

UNSPOTTED FROM THE WORLD

BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE

Read the following verses and look for 3 blessings the Lord promises us for being obedient.

READ: D&C 59:4

  1. Crowned with blessings from above
  2. Commandments not a few
  3. Revelations in their time
  • What do you think each of these might mean?
  • Which of these does not seem like a blessing for being obedient? (Given more commandments)
  • Why would a blessing for being obedient be more commandments?

(The following is adapted from Come Follow Me Through the Doctrine and Covenants)

Have you noticed that when people commit to living a godly lifestyle, they get more commandments? Think about Nephi. Because he chose to be obedient to the commandment to move out of Jerusalem forever, what additional commandments was he given? (get the brass plates, live in a desert, build a boat, forgive his brothers, etc.) There are many other examples in the scriptures. The question you are probably asking yourself is this: Why? Why commit to living commandments if it just seems to make life harder?

The answer can be found in…

READ: D&C 59:23 (peace in this world and eternal life in the world to come)

QUOTE BY PRESIDENT EZRA TAFT BENSON: “Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can. He will deepen their joys, expand their vision, quicken their minds, strengthen their muscles, lift their spirits, multiply their blessings, increase their opportunities, comfort their souls, raise up friends, and pour out peace.”

MINI LESSON

(Adapted from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families)

Watch the first 1-2 minutes of either one of these Dalmatian videos

VIDEO: 4 Dalmatian Lovers 😁 Funny and Cute Dalmatian Dogs Videos Compilation – YouTube
OR
VIDEO: Dalmatians being the cutest and funniest dogs for 5 minutes straight – YouTube

Just as Dalmatians have spots, what are some other things that are spotted? (As a family list things such as leopards, dirty cars, children with chicken pox, and so on. You could also have fun with this and talk about spots people can have such as measles, chicken pox, warts, freckles, and moles.)

Do you think it would be better to be spotted or unspotted?

READ: D&C 59:9

  • What would cause one to be spotted?
  • What can we do to get rid of those spots?
  • What can we do to keep them off?

In your scripture journals, draw a line down one page. Together read the following verses and on the left side of your page list things that would help you remain “unspotted” from the world and on the right side list blessings that come from keeping the Sabbath holy.

READ: D&C 59:10-19

PONDER & DISCUSS

  • How can keeping the Sabbath Day holy help us become spotless?
  • Why shouldn’t Sunday be the only day we use to keep ourselves “unspotted”? (verse 11)
  • How many blessings are offered to those who strive to keep themselves unspotted from the world?
  • Which blessings could you use in your life right now?

CONFESS GOD’S HAND IN ALL THINGS

BACKGROUND

VIDEO: In the Spirit of Thanksgiving (4:48), click HERE

Is Thanksgiving the only time we should be thankful?

SCRIPTURE

READ: D&C 59:20-21

In your scripture journals, have everyone take a moment and translate into their own words what these verses said. Then share with each other what everyone wrote.

LESSON

SHOW IMAGE:

ASK: What is an everyday item that you use that you may take for granted? (For example, shoes) How would life be different without that item?

DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

  1. Play the M&M Gratitude Game, click HERE
  2. Have everyone write a Thank You card to someone they know. (You can purchase thank you cards at the Dollar Store)
  3. Say any of the following Gratitude Prompts one at a time as family members write down their responses in their scripture journals. When you are done, go around and have everyone read what they wrote. Click HERE

PONDER & DISCUSS

As you listen to the music video, be thinking about how you can better “confess…[God’s] hand in all things” everyday and not just at Thanksgiving.

Study a recent General Conference talk. A great way to study a conference talk is to read along and highlight the parts that stand out to you. Then after the talk, review and discuss what you have highlighted.
