OBJECT LESSON:

Taken from a lesson taught by Marianne Hill

Oftentimes when I pray or read my scriptures, personally or especially as a family, there isn’t an immediate payoff. That can make my motivation wane. I learned a concept that changed my perspective. It can be applied to any good habit we are trying to establish.

The Compound Effect is the principle of reaping huge rewards from a series of small, smart choices. What’s most interesting is that the results are massive however insignificant the steps seem at the time. These small, seemingly insignificant steps performed consistently over time will create a radical difference.

{SHOW YOUR PENNIES}

What if I give you the choice of 3 million dollars today or a penny, doubled, every day for 31 days? Which would you choose?

The doubling penny isn’t worth much on day 1. Day 5 it’s worth 16 cents. Day 10 it’s valued at $5.12.

Day 20 it is still significantly less at $5, 243. But then the magic starts to happen.

By day 31 it is valued at $10, 737, 418.24.

Does this remind anyone of a scripture?

By small and simple things are great things brought to pass (Alma 37:6; 1 Nephi 16:29).

What if the way to make a big transformation is through small and simple things.  Would that feel a little more hopeful? A little more motivating? A little easier to sustain in the long term?

The beauty of the compound effect is that a huge transformation was offered by the smallest version possible. The penny is the tiniest possible value available in US currency. On its own, most people won’t even pick up a penny when they see it on the ground. Sometimes our experience praying or scripture reading is worth about as much as a penny. It is the consistency that builds and creates.  It’s the consistency of small and simple things that great things are brought to pass. One day/ one penny doesn’t amount to much.  But done every day, every day, every day we will receive our payout. (Refer to Elder Peter M. Johnson’s talk Power to Overcome the Adversary from Oct 2019 Conference)
